I think I would have to start my sophomore year in college, spring semester. That was 2001, I met Doc in 2005 but that semester I met the girl who would be my roommate the next year. It was this roommate who met the boy on the lacrosse team who was going to see a band we had never heard of. I am sure I have enough stories to have an entertaining sitcom, it might have to be on HBO though. Anyway, we all went out and saw O.A.R. and I was hooked. I could go on and on about how the band and their music and how it intertwined with my life up until I finally met Doc.
Fast forward to the summer of 2005, I'm on the O.A.R. email list and they send one out directing everyone to their MySpace page to hear their newest single. I went and thought MySpace seemed kind of fun, I hadn't heard of it. I signed up. A few weeks later I was looking for old friends, I searched by zip code and I saw this face:
I thought he was cute and I had had a few drinks so I clicked. His headline (remember those on MySpace) was a line from my favorite O.A.R. song Hey Girl. "In my mind I miss you at night when you're not here." I decided to send him a message, I was the girl who would walk right up to the hottest guy at the bar and pick him up but for some reason sending a message to some guy on the internet seemed very weird. All I said was "That's my favorite O.A.R. song" and we went from there.
I guess O.A.R. would be our equivalent of the yellow umbrella (if you watch How I Met Your Mother you know what I'm talking about). I still love the band, Doc and I saw them right before he left for his second deployment. If you haven't heard them you should check them out here or better yet see them live - I've done that like 17 times and can't wait to see them again.
Caution, one long sentence ahead:
Had I not spoken up and met my roommate (me to the random girl "you need a roommate for next year? me too") and she hadn't had that fling with the lax player who told us about the show in Providence I would have never gotten obsessed with O.A.R. and wouldn't have gotten the email that lead me to find MySpace at that particular time and I may not have seen Doc's picture and defiantly would not have known what his headline was from and probably would have never met him.
So there it is. How I met my kids' father minus all of the side stories. It all comes down to a band, I just happened to discover while in college.
