It was so amazing to see D, of course I cried a little at the airport but so did she. Then I almost cried again with excitement when I saw the
Dunkin Donuts bag in her hand! No vanilla creme filled but she did have a Boston Creme and that was the perfect snack while waiting for her luggage.
It was as if no time had passed, that is the great thing about sisters, miles and years can separate you but when all is said and done you are never to far away from the days of late night whispers. Unfortunately, when she called her husband after she landed he kept her on the phone for quite some time and that seemed to be the theme of the trip.
The next day was the Saturday after payday so I thought it was the perfect time to show her what life is really like for an army wife - yup the commissary! We drove down to Ft. Lewis and I gave her the car tour of the things I knew (which is not much really) then we went to the PX and the dreaded commissary. She was stunned at the prices of things, it's all so cheap. It was a pretty calm day there - we only had one person in front of us at the self check out. I later told a friend that we had gone and that it was not crowded at all and D pipes in with, "are you kidding I felt like I was being knocked over!" I guess she doesn't realize that we wives are pretty rough and tumble too!
That night we went to the local piano bar, which I usually love but it was just so-so...until the pirates showed up. Seriously, there were about 25 people in full on pirate garb and for no reason other than what could only be described as a pirate bar hop. They were entertaining so I am glad they were there. Other than the pirates there were, as always, several birthday parties D was in the ladies room on of the party guests came up to me and said, "I am 74 years old and I have only said this to 2 people in my life, my late wife and you - I just want you to know that you are a beautiful girl and I didn't want to leave here tonight without telling you that." And then he went back to his party. It was one of the sweetest things anyone has ever said to me, he had no agenda and was not trying to picked me up for some sort of Freudian
delight. I am assuming that I must look a lot like his late wife did in her 20's and if that is the case I am happy to have been able to bring him back if only for a moment. All in all a good night.
The next day my friend from work came by and we all went to the Chateau St. Michelle winery for a tour and tasting. I love that place (thanks Cheryl for introducing it to me) we all decided that the Muscat is their best so we each picked up a bottle and went home. We spent the evening drinking wine and talking. It was perfect, like it would be if we lived closer together. D and her husband called/
texted about 15 times while we were there.
The next day (Monday) the 3 of us (we didn't scare my work friend off!) went to Seattle to be tourists. We did the underground tour which was very interesting, it seems that a lot of Seattle's history has to do with shit - for real! And really, it's no surprise because I happen to think this place is pretty shitty (
hehe). Then we went to Pike Place so see some fish throwing and get some cheap produce and flowers. D and her husband called/
texted about 45 times throughout the day.
Tuesday was St.
Patrick's day, we're not Irish but we drink like we are. I took her to see where I work then to
REI to get a watch for DH and then to the post office, it was nice to have someone to run errands with. I was a little bummed because DH tried to call and we kept getting cut off...the same time D had run off somewhere for her umpteenth call with her husband. That night I took her to a friend's neighborhood for some St. Patrick's Day drinks, I was glad she was able to meet another of my friends, I am sure she thinks my life is so sad and lonely out here. We weren't out late which was good because it was day 4 and I was getting a little sick of listening to D talk.
I know, I am bad - I love her but she has the tendency to just make crap up. If a story isn't interesting enough she will add some stupid detail that really doesn't matter but it makes her feel more important or something. I told all my friends to listen but throw away at least 10% of all her stories. Tuesday's phone count was about 30.
By Wednesday I was ready to say goodbye. I wanted my house back, I wanted my schedule back and I was on the verge of losing my sanity! Even back home we haven't really spent 5 solid days in a row together since...high school! We didn't do much, a little shopping then came home to watch TV. She called her husband for the like 50
th time just to say goodnight and some how that pissed him off. I have no idea what was going on but he was complaining that she didn't talk to him at all the whole week and she didn't seem excited to come home. So she called him a girl and that really set him off! It turned into her screaming on the phone with him...so not OK. I may hate my upstairs neighbors because they are loud and ghetto but I don't want them thinking the same about me.
I was pretty pissed, I told her to tell him that they have spoken more these last 5 days than DH and I have the past 7 weeks! I gave up my evenings on
IM with him, which is almost all of our communication, to hang out with her and she couldn't go 2 hours with out checking in?
I really hate that all that happened right before she left, because we had a really good weekend and that is what I want to remember. I love my sister but she is like anything else - better in moderation. That being said I miss her already! :)
