now that Theresa made me bawl...

Long Island Medium, it's like watching beaches 3 times in 30 minutes.  Every time she reads someone it's like a knife in my heart.  If I could there are 2 people that I would love to hear from, my dad and my sister in law.

Obviously my dad, it's no secret that I was a daddy's girl, I miss him so much every day.  I just want to hear that he forgives me for not coming to visit him as planned the day before he went into his coma.  I was tired and called him, he said it was no problem and he would see me tomorrow.  No big deal, well so much can change in 24 hours with a cancer patient.  The other thing I really want to know is what he thinks about the direction my life has gone.  This is not what we planned for me.  I know that all that really matter was my happiness but he was so proud that I went to such a good school for business and that I was going to be a big shot one day.  Well, I'm CEO/CFO of the Random house so that's something.  I want to know that he's part of my daughters' lives even if they will never know him.

My sister in law, I never met her, she died a month before Doc and I met.  She brought us together, it's such a weird thought but had she not been sick Doc may have never moved home from California.  I strongly believe that she had a hand in us finding each other, he needed me to help pull him out of the black hole he was falling down.  I want to know from her how I could go about bringing her memory in to our home without causing Doc pain.  I don't even like saying my  neighbor's name because she share it with his sister and we just don't talk about her.  I want to know more about her so that my girls can know more.

It's a weird thought, death is so final, that's what we are always told but what if it's not?  I believe in the after life both in heaven and here on earth.  I've lived in a home that had spirits living there and that is one of the reasons we left that home.  I know some people think it's a lot of crap and I am not here to debate - I just want to talk to my dead family, is that so much to ask?

28 September 2012

fine line

I want to tell you all about what Doc has been up to, I am excited about his progress but he's under medical care and it's not my place to disclose everything.  I have always been open about what he goes through but mostly as it effects me.  I think I can keep that up.  What's really going on is that I am so glad he's there, this opportunity isn't available to everyone which is truly unfortunate but Doc's there and he's making the most of it.

This weekend he's back in Massachusetts for the first time since Christmas 2006!  Isn't that nuts?  He is only there for a short trip this time but I think he's going to go back next weekend too.  It works out so well this weekend as the pastor from him church is retiring and moving back to Whales and the new pastor is being introduced.  This new pastor just happens to be one of Doc's best friends from college.  (Have I mentioned that Doc went to Bible College in his past life?)  The school was in California so it's totally random that he would end up there.

The girls and me are still here plugging along.  I am ready to be sick over 110ยบ weather - isn't it almost October?  I am pretty sure that I will have rewatched the entire Dawson's Creek series by the Doc comes home.

almost wordless Wednesday

Our first night in our first place together.  Nov 2006, a crappy apartment is a really crappy part of Fayetteville, NC.  Doc lived like this for a month while I wrapped things up in Rhode Island and coordinated the movers.  This is the glamorous side of army life, young marriage, PCSing, short term living while training...We were so deliriously happy like this.  We had everything we needed, pizza, beer, a computer and a twin sized air mattress.  I love the blessings in my current life but I wish we could vacation back here for a few days a year.

25 September 2012

just what I needed

My friend who lives next door came over tonight and we made dinner, had wine, chatted all while our kids played.  Human one on one interaction is just what I needed.  I am feeling refreshed and ready for the rest of this time away from Doc.  Not saying a few more girls nights wouldn't be amazing but right now I'm feeling good.

I do miss Doc something fierce.  I hear how tired he is and how draining this all is and I can't help but love him more.  He is doing all of this for us, him and me, me and the girls.  As proud as I was of my bad ass ranger I am more proud of my fighting-for-quality-of-life former ranger.

24 September 2012

daddy go home

I am so glad things are going well with Doc, he's got a whole team working together just for him.  For the first time people actually care about him and doing what's best for him.  It's really amazing.  He starts his day at 7 and is in appointment after appointment and by the end of the day (we really by the middle of the day) he's spent.  He really has nothing left to talk to me or TC.

She asked "daddy go home" which in TC language means she is asking for him to come back.  Ugh, this time is worse than last, she has been CRAZY.  We had a little chat about missing Daddy and talking about it before we throw things across a room, I am not sure if it really sunk in though.

For me, I am glad he's finally getting the testing needed for a proper diagnosis but I miss him!  It was a long mentally/physically draining week taking TC to her appointment then Little A being sick and all the other things that come along in life - it would have been nice for him to ask me how I was doing...I know, I'm being selfish again but I can't help it.  I am always telling him that I am thankful that he is doing this for the good of our family, I appreciate the strain he puts himself through on a daily basis would it kill him to simply ask how I am doing?  I am very "woe is me" right now so I will stop.

3 more weeks, we both need to survive and on the other side we will both be better for it.

21 September 2012

9 months

My little lady is 9 months old, I don't know how it's possible because it feels like she's always been a part of this family.  She is an expert crawler, she's like the flash.  She's trying really hard to pull up but she's a bit of a chunker so that's getting in the way.  She claps and laughs.  She wants to spend every waking moment doing whatever her sister is doing or right next to me.  She will follow me around the house "momma momma momma momma..." and climb up my legs while I am cooking dinner.

She is just awesome, her ability to put up with everything her sister throws at her amazes me, TC isn't always a big fan of sharing me.

Her stats, she is 22.5lbs and 28 inches long.  A big girl but like her sister her growth has slowed way down, only gained a pound in the past 3 months but no worries, she's got chub to spare.

I hate that Doc is missing another month of her life, since he doesn't remember any of TC's first year I really wanted him to take every minute with this one in.

For fun, the day I had her at 39 weeks, then a 39 week old baby girl.
She is doing things at a much slower pace than my 8 month walker TC but it's alright with me, I am 99% sure this is my last baby, she can stay a baby as long as she wants.

19 September 2012

meanwhile, on the east coast

I dropped Doc off at the airport bright and early on Sunday morning.  He arrived in Washington that afternoon and got himself situated.  At first he was feeling very low, the room he has at the Fisher House has two twin beds, no TV guide (his issue), and almost no cell reception.  He isn't a fan of communal living, even putting his food in a fridge with everyone else's food causes him a lot of anxiety and he wont even go get his food around regular meal times because he has a hard time being around people he doesn't know.  By that night he was feeling really down and wanting to come home.

I made him promise to try, even if he thinks what they are doing is totally stupid (like art therapy or something that he thinks is bogus).  He promised.

By his call the next morning I could tell something had shifted.  I was driving to San Diego for TC's appointment so I couldn't really get into it I could just hear it in his voice.  That evening when he called he told me that for the fist time since he was wounded that he feels like a patient, he feels like there are people who actually care if he gets better and will do everything in their power to make it happen.  I silently cried on the other end of the phone.  I hadn't heard hope in his voice in...well in years.

He started treatments on Monday and already he's interviewed with all of his doctors, had acupuncture, a sleep study, a hearing test and some other pain management meetings.  They gave him some thing that he attaches to his ears and sends electricity to his brain to trick his brain into not feeling pain.  All of this - in 2.5 days!  And if you've been following along you know that I had told him and other doctors that I wanted half of these things for him YEARS ago!  I guess that isn't the point but it is still validating to me.

I have high hopes for this trip, I am fighting back tears at the thought of even a small part of the old Doc coming back to me.  I really hope things continue this way and he keeps his spirits up.

18 September 2012

thankful

There is no other word, thankful pretty much sums it up.

I am thankful that my baby girl is going to be just fine.  I had the fears that I think most parents have but they were right there - like doctors were checking for them...I still tear up thinking about it.

I am thankful that while I don't have many great friends here there are people willing to sit in a car with me for 6 hours just so I don't have to do it alone.  A woman I've met a few times and always thought was really nice (Doc's friend/boss's wife) heard that I had to go on my own and said that whenever it was, she was going with me.

Look at all the stickers she earned from the nurse!
I am thankful that the drive was easy and uneventful.  So beyond thankful that I saw the trashcan in the middle of the highway.

I am thankful for health insurance, people have all sorts of things to say about Tricare but when TC was 4 months old and I had to bring her to the ER when I thought she was having a seizure all I had to think about was her, I didn't have to forgo the CT scan because it was just too expensive.  And now, with all the blood work, appointments, specialists...I didn't have to pay so much as a co-pay.

I am thankful for the hospital.  Growing up in Massachusetts I had some of the best hospitals in the world 40 minutes down I-95, while this hospital was a wee bit further it was accessible.  Everyone there, from the parking attendant to the doctors greeted us with smiles and went out of their way to be helpful.  I know that not everyone who goes to that hospital is as lucky as we were and those smiles must be a great comfort.

I can't begin to tell you how thankful I am for the doctor we saw.  Dr. Bradley is the Division Chief of Infectious Diseases, he was amazing with TC and with me.  He came in and was wonderful with TC, made her feel right at home.  When it came time for him to examine her she sat there like I've never seen before, she didn't fight, she did what he asked, she said please and thank you and that was all him.  His confidence and sincerity put her at ease.  With me, he took his time and went over her blood work test by test and told me what they were looking for, how they looked and where TC was on the spectrum.  I felt comfortable asking him question, how ever long I needed to talk he was giving me the time.

Because of this I am alright with not getting any definitive answers.  I always knew that it may possibly be her body's new temp.  She doesn't have pain, she shows no symptoms and she's still thriving.  At this point putting her through more invasive tests for what is probably nothing is not something I think we need to do.  I will be on the look out for anything out of the ordinary, as most parents are, but other than that it's business as usual her at the Random House.

I really can't thank you enough for the thoughts and prayers we had coming from all over.  I could feel them when I needed them most.  Thank you.

17 September 2012

all clear

We're home and I am too fried for a full post but the bottom line is that my little girl is just perfect.  Apparently she is running hot because she's a little firecracker!  Alright, I made that up.  I am so happy, and tired so I will tell you all about our trip tomorrow.

Thank you for the thoughts.

16 September 2012

tomorrow

We are going to the hospital tomorrow.  Luckily I found someone to come with us.  I've wanted to talk about it but...I don't know, I just can't.  Everything else in my life you can't get me to shut up about but this - the possibility that my kid is sick...I just, well, where are the words for that?

Please keep us in your thoughts tomorrow, just the drive alone (3 hours each way) is a hell of a day.

I will be praying for the doctors, that they have guidance and knowledge.  I want answers, please tell me why my baby is sick and fix her.  I want to take her temp without holding my breath.

My sweet healthy girl, I want her back.

(Repost) my September 11th story

My roommates and me 2001-2002
This is long and very personal so I understand is not everyone reads but I think it's time I put this down so I always know what that day was like, everything about that day.

I looked back and was surprised to see that I hadn't posted this before.  It seems that we all know where we were, what we were doing and how we reacted the on September 11, 2001.  The day has a whole extra element for me because I was horribly violated the night before.  I thought the most I would have to worry about that day was dealing with being date raped but I would soon find out that wouldn't be the case.

I remember stepping out of Hall 10 on campus around 8:45 EDT.  It was one of those perfect fall days where the warm sunshine mixed fall air in a way that you only find in New England.  I tried to appreciate it but my head was swirling, what was I going to do about what happened the night before?  I wasn't even sure what happened - I said no over and over but I didn't scratch or scream or really do anything other than cry.  With that on my mind it's not surprising that when I heard the girls talking about the plane crashes I only half listened and assumed it was a new movie or something.

It was clear that word had not spread on campus yet, the rotunda was bustling as usual, the Greeks were in their spots, the jocks in their spots, the student government in their spots and the rest of us filled in the holes.  Class went as scheduled, Business Law I think - the professor made no mention to what happened.  At 9:50 when class was dismissed I made my way back to the rotunda to find the entire student body gathered together watching the tiny TVs in horror.

I couldn't believe it, the first thing I did was call my sister at her school outside of Boston, I knew her boy friend was flying out to California but I didn't know what day.  He was safe.  I made my way over to another building on campus and once again the students were all brought together watching in disbelief.  There were hugs and tears and terrified faces.  Many of the students were from New York and New Jersey, our campus was just 50 miles south of Boston - this was happening in our back yard to people we love.

I spoke to my mom, my siblings, my stepmother.  I wanted nothing more than to call my father because he is who I turn to when horrible things happened but he had died 4 months earlier.  I remember feeling helpless and terrified.  I wondered about my brother who was stationed in Japan with the Marines.  I will admit that I didn't know where Afghanistan was so I looked at a map and wondered if he would be sent.  I couldn't imagine someone I love being sent to war - it was just impossible to wrap my mind around.

I got back to my dorm and talked to my roommates about it all, we were party girls at the time.  We were just getting to know each other but this brought us together in a way we could have never imagined.  I called my office in down town Providence, we were open so I went to work.  Radio stations had stopped playing music and people were just calling in and talking.  It wasn't the angry anti Muslim crap we hear today, it was from the heart words of love and fear.  At this point flags were at half staff.

In the office the phone didn't ring, no one was thinking about commercial real estate.  The agents were watching a little black and white TV with a bunny ears antenna.  I spent most of the day on my phone and in tears.  At one point Providence officials were searching for a suspected terrorist who ran off a train, thank God it was nothing.  I learned that a friend had not heard from his brother who worked in the North Tower.  It was the longest 4 hours of work.

By the time I left the office at 5 EDT there was an obvious mood shift.  The radio was playing music, songs about peace, songs about country, and songs about heroes.  The flags were back up and being flown proudly.  People had started putting flags everywhere they could.  The unity that I had seen on campus was spreading to down town Providence and across the country.

I got back to school quickly because most offices had closed and there were few cars on the road but people weren't speeding, people weren't cutting each other off, people were being respectful.  Without planes flying it was quiet.  I still felt lost and scared.  My roommates and I decided to go to a chapel service that night.  The priest told us that he really didn't know what to do, what do you say when something like this happens?  He said that when he doesn't know where to go when seeking God's guidance he starts at the beginning so he read from the book of Genesis.  I don't remember exactly which passages he read but I do remember for the first time in over four months I felt my father's presence.  I had heard about it from other people who lost people but I knew I hadn't experienced it.  It was what I needed at that moment.  It was reassurance that alive or dead when I need him he would be around.

Later that night my friend's brother made it home a hero.  The intercom in the north tower told everyone to stay put but he knew better and being the loud Staten Island boy that he is got his entire office out of the building safely before the tower collapsed.

In the days and weeks to come campus was on lock down.  Classes were welcome distractions.  Our school lost two alumni, one of which was from my home town and very close to a close friend of mine.  Flags popped up in every dorm window.  There were still parties but they were patriotic parties, I know it sounds weird and disrespectful but is how many people coped.

As for me I decided not to do anything about what happened the night before.  My brother went from Japan to The Philippians but would never go to Afghanistan.  In 2005 he was one of the Marines taking Fallujah and has since retired from the military.

notes from basic training

This my friends, this is is the man I married.  This is what basic training can do to you.  Can't you just see Doc in his ACUs curled up on a bottom bunk forgoing sleep to scribble his new wife a letter and me, standing at the mailboxes of my old apartment, tears running down my face taking in every word ignoring the January cold?  It was all so.damn.romantic.

That envelope with the blue tint, there was nothing better in those days.

These letters are my most prized material possessions.  They are an irreplaceable piece of our little family's history.  Now and then I pull them out now and read every scribble trying to hold on to the feeling I had when I first read these words.  For a moment I am back there, the 25 year old with no idea what she was getting in to.  If I could go back I would do it (mostly) the same.  I wouldn't want to warn myself about the accident, the TBI, the hurt and pain.

The good was that good and I can go back and hold the letters in my hand and remember.  I love my husband, I loved the kid who wrote this letter and I love the man who  tosses out daughters around the living room.  We all change, some more and faster than others.

When the image of his vehicle overturning into that ditch in the middle of the desert halfway around the world enters my head I try to replace it with the image of him on that bunk, bald head and all, fanatically trying to put his emotions onto the paper before lights out.

home small home

I have talked about how small this post is a few time but I don't think you are really getting it so tonight I thought it would be fun to show you.  Since my helicopter is in the shop I have to use maps from Google Maps, these maps are a little older but the do the job.

It doesn't look that bad but to put it in perspective, that aqua colored line, in real life that line is only a half a mile long.  I drew it from the gas station (which is also the Class Six, PX, Clothing & Sales, and Mini Mart) to the Commissary (which has 3 lanes, one real land and 2 self check outs).  The houses highlighted are for civilians since there aren't enough military personal to fill them.  The newer houses are where we all live, people who work on this post and Marines from the base 40 miles away.  There are also some civilians in the newer homes but if military need to move in they are kicked out to the older homes.

This map is the drive into town, it's about 30 miles though foothills and farms.

This place is smaller than my high school...it's crazy.

08 September 2012

the skinny

A few days ago I replaced the battery in my scale, it had been out for a few months.  I closed my eyes, stepped on, opened my eyes and couldn't believe it - 145.  Now this isn't my goal weight (that's 135) but I am 10lbs less than my pre Little A weight and 5 below my pre TC weight! At 5'7" it's not really too shabby.

About 3 days before conceiving TC, The day before I found out Little A was coming, then today.
I am pretty sure I owe it all to the stress with TC and other issues because I haven't worked out in months (my back is still messed up and with Doc's schedule I can't get into a physical therapist) and I enjoy ice cream and wine...well stress and breast feeding but I don't want to sound like one of those smug moms "you know the weight fell right off because I nursed".

I do have to tell you, seeing what can happen while sitting on my ass is pretty motivational.  It's cooling down out there so hopefully my neighbor and I can start our morning walks again.  I also still have my belly jiggle and big 'ol boobies and those stuck around until I was done nursing TC.

If you can keep a secret I will tell you my plan, once Doc is gone I am going to jump in with eating healthy and working out...he's gone for 3-4 weeks so I bet I can tighten up and drop a few more pounds while he's gone.  I am excited, I was stuck in the 150s for so long after I had TC and the thought of being back in the 130s makes me giddy.  (It's still a far cry from 125 I was before Doc and I moved in together but one thing at a time.)

Because this picture of my 25 year old self never gets old.  I never thought I would want those little boobies back...

MilSpouse (First) Friday Fill-In #74

Hello fellow fillers from Wife of a Sailor's monthly fill in.  Welcome to my little spot on the web, feel free to look around and ask questions.  I've linked to some important things from the last moth so you can get up to speed if you wish.  Please let me know you stopped by so I can do the same - I'm also interested in a button exchange partners.

1. What’s one thing in the past month you would have changed?
I think this is pretty obvious for me, my sweet TC wouldn't be running a constant fever and wouldn't have had to get blood drawn.

2. What was your favorite thing that happened in August?
Doc came home from his TDY!

3. What did you do to celebrate Labor Day?
Ummm nothing?  I think I played in the yard with TC.

4. What do you HAVE to have handy by your bedside?
My phone, I guess.  But not my actual phone that makes calls, a month ago I downgraded from a smart phone but I still use my smartphone on wi-fi for apps and stuff so that one I like to have close by.

5. What are you looking forward to in September?
The return of my TV shows I guess.  I don't expect it to be a great month with Doc leaving again and taking TC 3 hours away just for an appointment about her fevers.  I guess I look forward to getting a diagnosis for her but that also terrifies me.

06 September 2012

college

All the back to school stuff is making me remember the good old days, well the crazy old days.  College - what a nutso time.  While reminiscing I found some of my favorite pictures from those days.  I am kind of glad that digital cameras were still like $500 back then...while I would have more of these fun pictures I can't even imagine how many incrimination pictures would be floating around out there!

First night back senior year - post celebratory power hour.

Playing Tetris on my PC, like I did all.night.long.
I'm Scooter, for no reason at all.
Free shots for freshmen at the end of senior year, I didn't go to school with fuzzy faced people I just have no idea who those girls are and I'm nice like that.

Things weren't easy back then at all - I lost my dad, had loans coming out of my ears, had no money to by food never mind books...but when I think back at my time there I can't help but smile.

05 September 2012

(almost) wordless wednesday

My little lady bug, while I am worrying about her big sister this little lady is just growing and learning new things everyday.  She's trying to pull herself up and explore the world around her.  Now that she's an expert crawler she's checking everything out.  Bottom line, she's a dream.  She has so much love in her heart and so much chunk in her legs.  What more could a mother want?

04 September 2012

going alone

This is army life and that means we have to do a lot of stuff without our other half.  Now not only am I not going to the east coast with Doc I will no have to take TC to the doctor in San Diego alone.  Ugh, I really hope they don't have to do anything too serious to her because I don't know how I will do.  (And more importantly because I don't want them to have to do anything to her but I am being selfish right now, roll with it.)

They will call back tomorrow with any tests I will need to have done before we go and I will find out exactly when we go but it's going to be after Doc leaves.  Three hours each way for an one appointment with 2 kids - ugh.  Anyone ever have to travel for an appointment?  I am going to call Tricare tomorrow and see if they help out with the travel or anything.

She is still running a fever, I was hoping it was one of those things that corrected itself once you brought attention to it.  In other news, I gave TC a little hair cut, it's not even or stylish but the straggly former baby hair seems to be gone.  It was only about 2 inches but I feel like it's so short now!
I hope to be back to normal soon, thanks for sticking with me.

03 September 2012

please don't show me your boots

I have serious fall envy, I know I am a broken record.  Soon people will be posting pictures of pumpkin patches and cute fall clothes...woe is me.  If I had to pick one outfit to wear all fall it would look like this:

fall love
And since in the fantasy I am also loaded (hello that scarf is over $200!) my girls would have designer jeans and riding boots as well.  We would be that family that everyone says "what a stylish family" and it would all be effortless.

So the real question, should I save my pennies to buy boots for the 2-3 months I can actually wear them?  I think I should...

02 September 2012

i (heart) RI

There has been a lot of talk lately about life after the army.  We have no idea when it will happen or what it will entail but the biggest talk is where to live.  In my heart I want to return to good 'ol Rhody - that's Rhode Island for those not in the know.

But Amber, I thought you were from Massachusetts.

I am from Massachusetts, I am from a town bordering RI, so close that I could walk to Rhode Island.  I went to college in Rhode Island and decided to stay after graduation.  I will always be a Mass-hole, it is where I was born and raised - when someone asks where I am from it's always Massachusetts but Rhode Island has my heart.  Technically, since I am still registered to vote in Rhode Island, I am a Rhode Islander.

Doc would prefer the middle of nowhere Vermont or Maine - hells no!  I have had my fill of the middle of nowhere just in this year that we've been in Arizona.  I wouldn't say no to living in Boston or in the burbs of Boston but that is just way more expensive than we will ever afford for the type of house we want.

Let me just take a moment to sell you on Rhode Island:
1) My home zoo, I love that place.
2) Scarborough Beach from my last trip home.
3) Just some of the 50+ Dunkin Donuts locations in a 10 mile radius of Providence.
4) Providence Water Fires, it is amazing and brings the whole state together.
5) Dels Lemonade - try it, you'll know
6) Awful Awful, like a milk shake but so much more
7) Harbourside Lobstermania, a great place to grab lunch and a fun bar with live music after dark.
8) Block Island
9) McCoy Stadium home of the Pawtucket Red Sox and my first "date" with my BFF's now husband haha!
10) One of the many pumpkin patches.
11) Providence Skyline.
12) The Capitol Building in the snow.
13) The Newport Bridge
14) My mall, I miss my mall!
15) This is a sign on one of my favorite restaurants, Twin Oaks - it pretty much sums up life in RI.
16) Another beautiful shot of Providence.

Gah, I hate fall, it makes me so homesick!

the whole truth

So here it is, clutter EVERYWHERE, last night's pizza box, my little helper, and the one who just had to join us and let that be know by crawling in screaming.  While it is fun to have TC sit on the counter and help me cook making dinner was time away from, well time away.  Chaos, embracing it and loving the little moments.

from 2 nights ago
